Hailing from Bern Switzerland, Michael Mischler is a graduate of Schule für Gestaltung Biel where he studied Graphic Design. One of the first graphic designers and editors at Gestalten, Mischler conceived, edited, and designed over 20 publications on various subjects in graphic design, typography, and visual culture throughout his time in Berlin at the publishing house between 1998 and 2006. Mischler co-founded Gestalten Fonts in 2003 and continues to scout out fresh typography talent for the foundry. In 2006, together with Nik Thönen, he also founded the independent font foundry Binnenland.ch. He currently lives and works in Bern.

How would you characterize your design style?
Place of work
Bern, Switzerland / Berlin, Germany
Can you give us a short description about your font?
It was first designed to be used in “Trigger” (a dgv book) but never made it into the final product. But it was used as the headline font for “Swiss Graphic Design” instead. Now the full alphabet is available for all you brothas and sistas out there.
Why did you design this font and what was your inspiration?
It was a project mostly done for fun. I just liked the letter in the word Brother and wanted to design the other letters and signs and digitalize them.
What was this font intended for?
Brother is a stencil font – heavy, loud and punchy and perfect for big headlines, flyers and posters that have to scream into the street.
Where does the name come from?
It was inspired by the blaxploitation movie poster for “brothers”.
Do you think that too many fonts exist?
